High School Physical Education
At North Haven High School students will participate in (9th) Freshman P.E. and (10th) Sophomore P.E. These courses are a graduate requirements. Each class is a semester which results in a .5 credit awarded upon completion with a passing grade for the semester.
Freshman P.E.
Freshman PE establishes the foundation for a variety of activities that students will experience at NHHS. These experiences may include team and individual sports and fitness training. Each student will be encouraged to set personal goals and perform to the best of their ability. A variety of assessment tools will be used to grade students throughout the term. The curriculum is aligned with the 2021 Healthy and Balanced Living Framework Curriculum.
Sophomore P.E.
This traditional physical education course is designed as a fitness/weight training class. Traditional activities may be used within this course; however, the majority of class meetings are used as ‘personal’ training sessions for the students. The class will teach beyond the basics of weight training and fitness and move into “core” exercises using a variety of training techniques.
Project Adventure (10th Grade Only)
Project Adventure is an alternative to the “traditional” physical education program. It is a challenging outdoor education curriculum designed to help students gain self-confidence and personal growth through a variety of activities. Some of these activities include low and high rope courses, group initiatives, geo-cache and snowshoeing. Students enrolling in Project Adventure will automatically be enrolled in Sophomore Health. This component is designed to fulfill the state mandate regarding health education.
Junior and Senior Electives
Junior and Seniors will have the option to enroll in a variety of P.E. electives.
Sports Management
This elective course is designed for students who have an interest in furthering their education and knowledge within the Sports Management field. This could include future physical education teachers, coaches, trainers, athletic directors, recreation directors, sports broadcasting and media personnel.
Beginning with the History of Sports and its impact on society to the impact of Title IX, this course will offer a wide variety of topics related within the sports field. Teaching topics of Sports Law, Finances, Administration and Public Relations, Media Involvement and Sponsorships.
Lifelong Games
11th and 12th grade students will participate in activities that are commonly played outside of the school setting and are present in daily life. These activities promote lifelong healthy and active lifestyles. Units include BBQ, Racket Sports, Golf, and Volleyball.
Resistance and Mindfulness Training
Resistance training is a key component to developing and maintaining physical fitness over one’s lifespan. This course is designed for those students who have a strong interest in increasing their skills, knowledge and understandings related to developing and instituting a personal resistance-training program. This course will also introduce Yoga and mindfulness exercises.
