North Haven's Continuum of Services

Therapeutic Learning Services

Mission Statement

The Therapeutic Learning Services (TLS) provides a continuum of services for students with significant disabilities to advance their educational and social growth. Through a culture of inclusion, each student will be challenged to meet his/her maximum potential.

 

 

Program Description

Therapeutic learning services are for students who require supports to meet behavioral, emotional, and social challenges. Students are supported by a special education teacher, and a school social worker or school psychologist through class-wide and individual behavior plans, individual and group counseling, social skills groups, and small group or individualized instruction. Students are included in general education classes as appropriate and to the maximum extent possible – but can also access a smaller, more individualized setting if needed.

Students are members of their respective classes and grade level teams and participate in the classroom environment with their peers as much as possible. The TLS receives support from a consulting psychiatrist. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst provides services or consultation on an individual basis as needed. We have a TLS at all three levels – elementary, middle school, and high school.

 

 

 

Intensive Learning Services

The Intensive Learning Services provides a continuum of services for students with significant disabilities to advance their educational and social growth. Through a culture of inclusion, each student is challenged to meet his/her maximum potential.

 

 

Program Description

Intensive Learning Services is designed to meet the needs of students with significant cognitive disabilities in the least restrictive environment that is appropriate to each student. All students are members of their grade level classroom or team and attend lessons with their class as appropriate. In addition, they receive individual or small group interventions through specialized academic instruction, discrete trial instruction, speech and language therapy, behavior management programs, social skills training, assistive technology, occupational therapy, and/or physical therapy. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst provides services or consultation on an individual basis as needed.

While some components of the program are universally designed, we focus on reaching each student’s individual goals and objectives through their own personal learning style. Our program is designed to not only focus on our students’ academic, social, emotional, self-help and related services goals but also on fostering independence.

The ILS offers a continuum of service delivery models including one-to-one instruction, small group instruction, inclusion, and reverse inclusion. North Haven Public Schools have ILS at all three levels – elementary, middle and high school.
