Tisha b’Av is the traditional day of mourning in the Jewish faith. Also called the English Ninth of Av, it marks the day the first and second temples of Solomon were destroyed. Tisha be-Av is observed on Sunday, July 18, 2021 and marks the end of a period of mourning called the Three Weeks.

According to the Talmund, which is a collection of ancient teachings regarded as sacred and normative by Jews, many disastrous events occured on the same day. To name a few, the decree that the Jews would wander 40 years in the wilderness; the fall of Bethar in 135 CE, ending the second Jewish revolt against Rome; and so on.

From sunrise to sunset, a 24-hour fast is to be performed in addition to that, the liturgy of the day, includes the reading of the Lamentations of Jeremiah and the recital of dirges (qinot) performed by candlelight in a gloomy atmosphere. Many Jews visit the cemetery on this day. If Tisha b’Av falls on the day of the Sabbath, it is postponed for a day for observance.
