The Sacred Heart of Jesus also known as the "Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus" is a solemnity that is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church. The holiday is commemorated on the third Friday following Pentecost and celebrates the physical heart of Jesus which symbolizes his love for humanity.
The devotion of the Sacred Heart is one of the most widely practiced and well known Catholic devotions. This holiday can be traced back to its origins in the 11th century as the Fathers of the Church found a renewal in the writings of Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries. The holiday originated as a way to worship the scared wounds that Jesus received on the cross but eventually turned into a celebration of his love. Although, how this transition occurred is anonymous, it is most often attributed to St. Bonaventure.
The Feast of the Sacred Heart is generally celebrated through a feast with family and friends to spread their love with one another. Other ways to celebrate include attending a mass in which a flaming heart of Jesus is usually found. This heart is depicted with a bleeding lance wound surrounded by a divine light.
