Holy Ascension also known as Ascension Day commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven and occurs the 40th day after Easter Sunday. This year it takes place on June 10th, 2021.
Ascension Day is one of the earliest Christian festivals and dates back to year 68. According to the Bible Jesus Christ returned to his disciples many times following his resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. They say these visits continued for 40 days before Jesus led them to Mount Olives where they watched him ascend into heaven. Although Ascension usually occurs on a Thursday, some churches celebrate it the following Sunday.
Ascension Day is widely celebrated throughout the world. In the countries in which it is a public holiday, people enjoy a long weekend and the streets usually become quiet. People often commemorate the ascension of Christ by hosting processions symbolizing Christ's entry into heaven. Churches also hold mass in which the Easter candle which is lit on Easter, is extinguished.
