Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Hanuman who is also considered to be one of the incarnations of Lord Shiva. Hanuman is known for having mastered the four Vedas and is considered to be a wise and powerful Hindu god. While Hanuman Jayanti is most commonly celebrated in the Chaitra month, in Kerala and Tamil Nadu it is observed between December and January.
On this day, devotees observe a day-long fast, perform puja by offering vermilion or red cloth, visit the temple and carry out religious gatherings. Various kinds of foods, sweets and flowers are also offered to Lord Hanuman and distributed to his followers as Prasad.
