Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islamic culture. Muslims observe the month of Ramadan to mark that Allah gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610. During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline — of deep contemplation of one's relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity, generosity, and intense study of the Quran.
It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate with loved ones. At the end of Ramadan there’s a big three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. During this time, everyone comes together for big meals with family and friends, exchange presents, and celebrate each other.
