This annual Sikh festival was started by the tenth Guru as a gathering of Sikhs for military exercises and mock battles on the day following the festival of Holi. Hola Mohalla begins on the first day of Chet, which is the start of the Sikh New Year. The festival reminds the people of valour and defense preparedness, concepts dear to the Tenth Guru who was at that time defending the Sikhs from the attacks of the Mughal empire and the hill kings. Hola Mohalla revolves around daytime demonstrations of Sikh martial art and other military sports. Evening events include Sikh worship services and the singing of hymns selected from Guru Granth Sahib. The grand finale at the end of the week is a martial arts and nagar kirtan parade.
