Holi is the most celebrated festival in India and marks the beginning of spring after a long winter to represent the symbolic triumph of good over evil. Holi is also sometimes called the “festival of love” as on this day people get to unite together forgetting all resentments towards each other. Although Holi is a religious holiday, its influence has reached all across India and numerous countries throughout the world have begun using the celebration as a cultural festival. Holi is celebrated together with community as entire streets and towns are turned red, green and yellow as people throw colored powder into the air and splash them on others. Each color carries a meaning. Red, for example, symbolizes love and fertility while green stands for new beginnings. Later in the day, families gather together for festive meals. It is also common to distribute sweets among neighbors and friends.
