Bahá'ís celebrate New Year's Day on March 21, the vernal equinox. This date has been celebrated as the New Year in Persia for thousands of years. For Bahá'ís, New Year is preceded by the Nineteen Day Fast, a time of spiritual introspection.

Naw Rúz is celebrated with many symbols indicating spring and renewal. A week or so before the holiday, lentils are placed in a dish to sprout into a mass of green blades. On the day of Naw Rúz, families gather in new or freshly cleaned clothes to celebrate the new year and pray. The sprouted lentils are thrown into running water, carrying away the bad luck of the previous year.
