Clean Monday is the first day of Great Lent, as Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox refer to the Lenten season. For Eastern Catholics, that places Clean Monday two days before Western Christians which celebrate Ash Wednesday as the start of Great Lent. 

Lent is traditionally a time of fasting and prayer in preparation for receiving or reaffirming baptism at Easter. Some Christians use Lent as a time to think about one’s life choices and mortality, as well as reflect on life direction.
