The Feast of Saint Francis is celebrated on October 4th every year and is also known as the blessing of animals. The feast commemorates the life of St. Francis the patron saint of animals and the environment, and is a special day for the church to bless pets popularized by many children in the US.

The services often include a verbal blessing and holy water to bless the animal, which can range from fish to dogs and really anything acceptable. Many churches hold a fundraiser to collect animal food and supplies to donate to local animal shelters and facilities needing and or accepting donations. The day also facilitates the opportunity for educators, activists, and animal rights organizations to teach about endangered animals and abuse and what can be done to help.

Saint Francis of Assissi founded the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church in the late 12th century. He is noteworthy for his extreme generosity to the sick and poor, especially those afflicted with leprosy, which were outcast to general society. Extremely passionate about animals and the environment, his love for others led to his acquisition of the Saint title after his death granted by Pope Gregory IX. The Church of San Francesco d’Assissi is a world heritage site as well.
